JUMP IN & Express Yourself
- Kawartha Art Gallery 190 Kent Street West Kawartha Lakes, ON, K9V 2Y6 Canada (map)
A partnership project between the Kawartha Lakes Community Safety and Well-Being Advisory Committee and Kawartha Art Gallery, the JUMP IN & Express Yourself! Exhibit invited youth aged 12 to 24 years, to consider the four priority areas of the City of Kawartha Lakes as identified by the Community Safety and Well-Being Plan Advisory Committee.
Expressing their concerns through their art, youth from across the City of Kawartha Lakes have shared poignant insights into the safety and well-being of their community in the areas of;
Mental Health and Addictions
Poverty
Housing
Youth
Please note: with this exhibit, we asked youth to create authentic, honest art about their experiences and ideologies. As a result, some of the content might be triggering or distressing.

When I was thinking about youth I thought about how teens don’t have many places to hangout with their friends where it wouldn’t be considered loitering.
My art piece was inspired by the fact that a lot of youth today feel overshadowed by adults trying to tell them what to do or how they should feel.
My work is about mental health and addictions.
I chose to show Housing and I hope the future will be something like my art in the upcoming years!
This piece touches mental health- the insecurities, grief and morbidity behind an expression of your day to day stranger, peer and others.
I chose to raise awareness for depersonalization disorder.
I chose to make a tree stump house in a swamp to show how all the good land left in Lindsay is already taken
I drew this picture because some people don't understand how dangerous and how bad it is about homelessness.
I feel an overwhelming pressure at times to get my life together
I am a 13 year old who loves to draw. I use a lot of pencils mostly.
The words you say are powerful and could be harmful.
This is an art piece that has the devil holding a housing contract and I made it
One way we could think about to decrease the rate of poverty and help with housing would be to create a new living environment for the less fortunate.
My picture was drawn to show how students at school can feel left out due to the clique and race
I believe that housing is a human right not a privilege, so it’s already sad enough that so many people wind up homeless on the streets
I have done this still life to reflect the image of food. I have a pantry that is always full.
I have experienced people with addictions.
I chose to show Climate Action and I hope the future will be something like my art in the upcoming years!
My work shows that anybody could be dealing with mental health problems such as anxiety, depression or PTSD, even if it doesn't look like it.
This piece of art was made to open eyes of parents or people who aren't really aware of society today.
The piece shown is a family outside of a home for sale. The house is small and in a very crowded area however, the price tag is very expensive.
In order to thrive in our community, our youth must be acknowledged through different lenses.
