Legacy Giving

The Kawartha Art Gallery has been a pillar of the City of Kawartha Lakes community for almost half a century. You can help it continue by making it part of your legacy for the future of this community. Below, learn about the powerful ways you can ensure arts and culture are a part of the Kawartha Lakes for generations to come.

We urge you to reach out to us to discuss what options are available to support Kawartha Art Gallery by emailing Susan at susan@kawarthagallery.com.

Tax Benefits

Your planned gifts can create excellent tax advantages; we recommend that you speak with your financial advisor to help determine which method is most advantageous to you from a tax perspective.

We Honour Your Gift

Your gift will be permanently honoured by Kawartha Art Gallery and will be remembered in many ways. Every time an artist creates a painting, a visitor walks through our doors, or a child lets their creativity grow by creating art, your legacy will have a living impact.

Types of Legacy Giving

  • A donation of securities or mutual funds is one of the most efficient ways to give. With a donation of securities or mutual funds, capital gains tax does not apply, allowing donors to give more and avoid paying capital gains taxes.  Kawartha Art Gallery receives the full fair market value when the security is sold, and donors get a tax receipt reflecting this larger contribution. Appreciated securities transfers can be made via Canada Helps, or for larger transfers to avoid transaction fees, can be arranged via direct transfer. Please contact us for more information.

  • Wills are the central pillar of estate planning. A gift by will, known as a bequest, provides the opportunity to create a legacy for Kawartha Art Gallery. Bequests are typically made as a:

    • Specific dollar amount, or a piece of personal property

    • Share or percentage of your estate

    • Residual amount, after other specific bequests are fulfilled

    Benefits of making a bequest:

    • Your estate receives favourable tax treatment, since you may claim the bequest on your final tax return, equal up to 100 percent of your net income in that year.

    • You have used and control of the asset in your lifetime

    • A bequest may be altered if your circumstances change

For inclusion in your will, simply name the Kawartha Art Gallery or direct to the Gallery’s permanent fund called the “Found Art Fund”, managed by the Community Foundation of Kawartha Lakes.

  • Some donors prefer to start a living legacy giving fund, also called a donor advised fund, with specific purposes that support the activities or operating of the Kawartha Art Gallery.  This allows donors to leave specific wishes and goals for supporting the Gallery.  These funds can be managed by the Community Foundation of Kawartha Lakes, a registered charity and public foundation that manages several family directed funds.

Any bequests in future wills can simply reference the name of this family directed fund held by the Community Foundation.  The advantage is that the fund agreement can be changed at no cost whereas the will changes may be more involved.

  • The move to 19 Cambridge Street South in Lindsay, our very own home, would not be possible without the support of individuals all over the community. Naming an exhibit area or part of the building is a meaningful way to directly contribute to our programming, or a way to permanently commemorate a loved one.
