COLLAGE: noun or verb? Day 15
Jellyfish, 2018 (36 x 42 inches) NFS
This piece began with an oceanography map that was given to me by a friend. The map was so beautiful but ripped and stained in some areas. I knew that if I cut the map up into small circles, I would lose some of its’ beauty.
I decided to create some large cut out pieces and collage around them.
The resulting composition really celebrates the negative space around the composition. And just like that I was off with a new collage direction to explore.
Red Tangle, 2020 (30 x 30 inches) $850 canvas
This piece began with a trip to the ‘Japanese Paper Place’ in Toronto. The quality of the paper, the intensity of the colour just had to be celebrated. I knew I wanted to highlight the red paper, so I started by creating large shapes with it. The other elements of the collage dance and interact with the red creating an energetic, vibrant composition.
Green Tangle, 2020 (12 x 12 inches) $85 birch panel
Like any idea that I have in Art, I explore it over several days, weeks or months. I began to try weaving the shapes into one another. I tried having the circles ‘spill’ out of the shape. I tried varying the sizes of the circles. I tried different colour combinations.
