Why Circles?
When I began large scale collages, I used a variety of shapes. When cutting rectangles, I found I needed to be very exact or the rectangles didn’t appear aligned as they butted up against each other. Circles on the other hand fit together, leaving a nice bit of negative space around them.
When creating a line of circles it didn’t matter how exact the sizes were as they still seemed to relate well. The spaces between the circles could be different sizes and it didn’t matter, not so with rectangles.
Over the years I have collected a number of different sized hole punches that help to generate large numbers of circles. Cutting circles by hand, with scissors, however can be very mediative and I will happily cut circles while listening to the radio or watching a show.
As I continued to work with circles, I reflected on how the negative space around them helped with their success in a collage. I thought about how negative space could come into play more with rectangles. One day, I experimented with cutting out the centre section of the rectangle- voila, negative space. This was the first collage I created using this idea.
In this collage you can see a culmination of several of the ideas that I have been working on: circles and rectangles, flowing lines like roads, opaque and translucent materials and a range of papers.
