The word ‘collage’ is a verb, referring to the process of making a collage.
Collage is also a noun, the product that is created.
In this exhibition, I would like to explore both the verb and the noun, look at some of the collages that I have created and also explore some of the thinking involved in collage.
The word collage comes from the French word “coller”, to paste.
Collage, as a fine art medium, emerged in France in 1910s with cubist painting and the explorations of George Braque and Pablo Picasso.
The first artist to exhibit collage was Juan Gris and you can view an excellent interactive examination of this seminal work here:

Interest in collage has been renewed through the development of new materials (acrylic gels, polymer emulsions and various glues) and technical processes (photocopying, photography, computer imaging).
Collage now holds a permanent place in the list of major media along with drawing, painting, print making and sculpture and like other Art forms, Collage is used to explore ideas and concepts.
