WRONG TO RIGHT by Elayne Windsor

This work was created from found paper on an old piece of plywood. As an artist I choose to use simple materials that I find around me. My artwork speaks to the beauty and use that continues to exist in the items we choose to discard. Worldwide the pulp and paper industry are the 5th largest consumer of energy. In 2014, it was announced that the worldwide consumption of paper has risen by 400% in the last 40 years. Using 40 cases of 100% recycled paper saves 24 trees, 7,000 gallons of water, 4,100 kilowatts of hydro and 60 lbs of pollution. (conservatree.org) The image that is created in this piece is map like, representing a city that is more circular in its configuration as opposed to our present linear visions. This speaks to the circular economies needed in the future. A circular economy values reusing, sharing, repairing, recycling to create a closed loop, minimizing the continuous extraction of resources, the creation of waste, pollution and carbon emissions. The title of the work speaks to the recycled nature of the piece. The work began as a collage, but unhappy with the final image I did not abandon or discard it! I repurposed the work taking it from ‘wrong to right’ in my minds eye.

As a collage Artist I am interested in the qualities of the paper: the colour, the weight, the texture, the translucency, the size, the memories...My work contains paper that has been sourced from old books, maps, playing cards, sewing patterns, scrapbook material or the trash- basically I am always looking at paper and contemplating the life that is left in it after it has been abandoned. My collages are created on birch panel, canvas or mat board. The elements are created with hole punches, paper cutters, xacto knives, circle templates and scissors. My work is often interpreted as painting from a distance, but people are drawn in to examine the detail and it is only then that they realize the work was created out of paper. Some viewers relate to a tiny fragment of paper contained within the piece, a piece which sparks a particular memory. Other viewers connect to the beauty of paper and the new life that it has been given. Paper speaks to the slow world in juxtaposition to our fast electronic world. Sometimes understanding the big picture means spreading it all out on the floor in front of you-crawling over the large paper map, slow nights playing cards around the table, the days of sending greeting cards through the mail or spending Saturday reading the newspaper. My work spreads these memories out in front of you. As we enter the Anthropocene it is important for all of us to extract every bit of beauty and use in the items around us.
