TRIBUTARY by Karen Buck-Mackintosh

Tributary depicts a close-up view of a creek that is part of the Lake Simcoe watershed. It winds through a rural property, in the eastern region of the City of Kawartha Lakes. It is a healthy wildlife corridor for an abundant variety of creatures. Fish spawn in the head
waters in the spring. The flow varies depending on the season and the climate, eventually finding its way to Lake Simcoe. The winter composition implies the importance of a balance in our seasonal climate. The photograph documents a natural beauty worth preserving. Environmental care is our shared responsibility of Stewardship of the land. Politicians need to allow the participation of transparent public forums and conservation appeals to protect the land and wildlife. Habitat destruction and water pollution from agricultural nutrient runoff threatens the area from expansion of drainage ditches, removal of hedgerows, extensive increase in tiling, and loss of wetlands. Agricultural practices need to adapt with regenerative practices. My vision and hope are for the protection and availability of clean water to all inhabitants of our community, country, and shared planet through increased awareness, and appreciation of the valuable, sustainable relationships with the earth and all of its creatures.
