COLLAGE: noun or verb? Day 11

This was the first big piece that I did in colour.
I needed something large to work on and since it was just a grand experiment, I used brown kraft paper.
Artists often complain that their best drawing always ends up being created on their cheapest paper. This is an example of that adage.
This piece was created out of the materials that I could find around the house: maps, newspapers, books and magazines.
The repeated brown background lacked depth. I solved the problem by adding in black marker after completion.
Framing it under glass helped to provide rigidity and protected the work.
Abstract art does not depict objects but instead uses colour and form in a non-representational way.
When you look at this piece, you can see that it is very unlike the ‘traditional’ collage which implies connections and seeks comparisons between images.
As I grew in size with my art, magazine and book images became too small to be easily referenced and my approach to collage changed.
I began to ’paint’ with the paper.
What was fascinating to me was how I could take all these scraps of worthless materials and put them together to create something beautiful and thought provoking.
