Artist Statement:
Julia is a 4th year student at Carleton University majoring in English, with a minor in Psychology. Despite not pursuing art professionally, she continues to enjoy creating art as a pastime, and a well-needed break from her numerous readings which seem to pile up during the school year. Though painting is a consistent choice, Julia also dabbles in cross-stitch art, Iphone quality photography and notebook doodles.
“The night before Ontario universities shut down due to increasing covid-19 numbers in March 2020, my roommates and I had a “proper” sleepover. We had been stressed with school, work and the concerning and uncertain information being relayed daily on the news and sought some kind of escape. The best we could come up with was a slumber party in the living room, with a fort made from random bedding, broomsticks, couches, nightstands- anything that would make our fort so cool that our 10-year-old selves would’ve been jealous. It became nostalgic very quickly, considering the fort had been made from little pieces of our childhood stuffies, pillows, blankets, all warped together into a cozy getaway. We spent what felt like the entire night just laying around in our pillow world, until one by one fading off in appropriate sleepover fashion. Coming back home for quarantine was difficult at first, and I seemed to cling to the memory of that sleepover and the fort as an unknowingly crucial start to what became 3 solid weeks of social isolation and distancing- followed by moving houses, moving towns, and settling into a summer back in Lindsay.”
