Joy is a Nova Scotia born artist who lives with her husband Chris in Kirkfield. A retired training designer, administrator, and instructor, she began her art journey in 1995 with the decorative arts. Upon retirement she expanded her art horizons and experimented with many art forms. Although her interests remain varied, her preference has evolved to be abstract realism imposed on intimate views of nature. This contradicts her tendency to be detailed, and she finds herself wanting to insert a bit of detail into a painting, perhaps the eyes of a bird or animal or a small bit in a nature scape.
Primarily self-taught, Joy has taken a few courses to explore techniques and improve her skills. Becoming a member of the Kawartha Arts Network in 2017 and taking two courses at the Haliburton School of Art & Design have served as strong catalysts for Joy to take her art further than she could have anticipated.
She has taught several beginner acrylic workshops in the Kawarthas, most of which were in support of community programs and fundraisers. She finds teaching beginners inspires her and refreshes her approach to her own art.

Totem
My art inspirations are a long-standing background in dance and my love of nature. I naturally strive to bring a sense of rhythm and movement to my artwork and am happiest when it is high impact with vibrant colours. For me, it’s primarily about offering an intimate view of nature. So much in our lives and nature is really just a dance of sorts, and so it is with painting. Connect with a brush as your dance partner, and it can bring about quite unexpected results.
My impression of a moody day and an aging totem pole somewhere on Canada’s Pacific Northwest Coast.
