MEET JOY MCCALLISTER

Joy McCallister is a Nova Scotia born artist who lives in the village of Kirkfield in Ontario’s Kawartha Lakes area. She has lived in Nova Scotia, Quebec, and Ontario.

Joy’s inspirations for her artwork come from her love of music and nature, her background in dance, and her roots in Canada’s Maritimes. The art of dance was a strong force in her life for 20 years and instilled a strong sense of self-discipline, resourcefulness, and a deep-seated connection with the senses.

Primarily a self-taught artist, she has taken a few workshops to explore techniques and strengthen her skills. Her journey to discover her preferred art style has led to experimentation with many mediums. Although her art interests remain varied, her preference is abstract realism imposed on intimate views of nature and everyday life.

After a career in adult education and training design, it has been natural for Joy to give some art instruction as time permits. She teaches the occasional beginner acrylics workshop, some of which have been in support of community programs or as a contribution to local fundraising events.

She has been a member of the Kawartha Arts Network since 2017.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Who I am as an artist and my inspiration comes from my love of dance, music, and nature. I’m happiest when my art is high impact with vibrant colour, and I see an expression of movement and rhythm in it. So much in our everyday life is a dance. So, it is with painting for me. I find if I allow my brush to be a dance partner, it can be fascinating to see what emerges. Art, whether dance or painting, is a powerful release mechanism that brings a calming quiet and inner ease wherein time just doesn’t matter.
