Words While We Wait - Day 2
Words While We Wait from Fenelon Falls, Ontario
A LITTLE MORE, AND A LITTLE LESS
Poet: Diane Engelstad
Artist: Joan Forsythe
I find myself
still wearing earrings every day.
This morning I chose them carefully—
small, sufficient, like punctuation;
because I was going out
(to the grocery store)
and didn’t want them
tangling in my mask strap.
I find myself
sighing and judging my culpability.
One year into a pandemic,
my son
has traded his smile
for a glazed look
from too much screen time
and too much sleep.
I find myself
gazing into the changing winter sky.
Here from my window
the blues and greys and yellows,
like watercolours,
clean and clear,
beckon me to open
to the kindness of the cosmos.
I find myself:
a little more, and a little less,
each day.
There is more Zooming at home from a laptop
and less zooming everywhere else
as errands and engagements
give way to contemplation
of the small and immediate details
that give life all the meaning I need
for now
