Artist Statement:
“I am a certified Dental Assistant and currently in my final semester of the Dental Hygiene program at Durham College. As much as I love teeth and promoting oral health, I’ve always loved drawing, colouring. I remember a lot of my peers would ask me to write their titles on our poster projects all throughout elementary school.
By mistake I was placed in the grade 10 art class when I was in grade 9, which is where I felt my skills began to improve. Two years ago, I started to use my art again as an outlet for stress and anxiety.
Typically, I work with acrylic on canvas or wooden boards. Sometimes I complete the majority of the piece with oil pastels, spray with a fixative then paint final acrylic details on top. I also love to do acrylic pours to make beach and wave scenes, paint flowers, plants, succulents, and dogs! The rest of my work and future pieces can be found on Instagram @shaylyn.art”
“Inspiration behind this piece is my love for tropical house plants. Some individuals cannot keep these beautiful plants alive and some can be toxic to their animals. This is a beautiful leaf from a plant you can't kill.”
“Inspiration behind this piece was the reference photo, Pete is always smiling even drenched after a swim in the ocean.”
