Lesley Drummond is an artist, educator and Arts advocate who has been actively involved in the Arts community of Kawartha Lakes since 1985. Currently on the Board of the Kawartha Lakes Arts Council and Director of the Kawartha Arts Network since 2007, she is based in Janetville.
Although Lesley’s BFA background from Queen’s University provided her with experiences in a wide variety of media, her chosen materials initially became acrylics, charcoal and photography. Broad experiences including extensive international travel, working in both private and public galleries, being Artist in the Park for three Ontario Provincial Parks and running the Visual Arts Department for three local high schools for 30 years solidified those skills and gave her the confidence and inspiration to move forward.
Since her retirement from teaching in 2015, she has focused more on mixed media work: incorporating photo transfers, collage, pastel, pencil, pigma pens, drywall compound and found objects onto her canvases. This has fulfilled her interest in working with actual textures along with exploring the technical challenge of recreating them in acrylics and dry media.
The exploration of space through structure has been a focus of her work since the beginning – rooftops, doorways, alleys and windows……all reflecting the cultures discovered through her travels or an environment that has an emotional connection for her. She has also done a number of works in different media focusing on trees, reflecting a more spiritual connection to a theme.
