Artist Statement:
“Through the making of thrown functional work I explore the surface of the vessel with layers that reflect fading or hidden words and memories. The work I make is rooted in functional forms, made for people to use. The surface reflects the material and how glaze can move.
I love the feeling of clay moving through my hands while I’m wheel throwing and being able to manipulate it into something that has a function. There is a connection made between a person and an object when it is involved in everyday life. As a maker, I have the opportunity to create something that has meaning to someone else in a way that I will never truly know. Objects have the ability or power to create associations through the feelings, memories, and experiences we have with them. I work to reveal and explore the relationships between human and object.”
“Palimpsest is the layering of text on top of an older text that has been covered but parts still show. I am working with the idea of reusing the same surface for new information, while maintaining traces of the previous text. I combine my words with the layering not only text and language but textures and patterns. I am also taking inspiration from what I know, and what I love. The memories I have of growing up are ones of nature: forests, water, exploring and climbing. This is my escape from life, and it feels right to combine this imagery with the words of my memories.”
