EXHIBITION STATEMENT
Lake Scugog has been my home for close to 25 years. I have been able to capture and share the beauty of this area through my photographs. People are often surprised when they see a photo and realize that it is from Lake Scugog. I try to offer new perspectives of what you see every day. Most of the time in the summer I am on my kayak trying to capture images of birds and wildlife. Through my persistence and patience, I have been lucky to do just that. This region is rich with diverse species of all fauna and flora which gives me ample subjects to capture.
This show truly encapsulates what it is like living on Lake Scugog. From the glorious sunsets to frogs under the dock, the images are sure to bring a smile to your face. The images will showcase the beauty of the area, giving those a better appreciation of Lake Scugog and the City of Kawartha Lakes.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Photography is about you, what you like, what inspires you and what you want to share with the world. These moments that we capture hold meaning for each of us.
The tricks of the trade that help photographers solidify those moments are not secrets and through the sharing of my work, I hope to provide some useful tips and inspiration to helping others make great photos.
“You don’t take a photograph, you make it”, a quote by famous landscape photographer Ansel Adams is my mantra. It doesn’t matter what camera you have, how fancy your gear is, you are in control and these moments are yours.
With every image I capture I try to look at it from a different perspective. How would a 3-year-old look at it? This often means getting into different positions, laying down in the dirt or trying something out of my comfort zone.
Nothing makes me happier than to share the images that I have captured of the beauty around us with others. From plants and flowers to gorgeous scenery and even the wildlife I meet along the way, every moment is special.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Rachelle Richard Mack spent her childhood in Bruce Country, and even at a young age was always interested in “taking” photos. Even with her little 120 Film camera she would capture photos of the farm animals, mostly cats and the glorious sunsets of Lake Huron. Eventually she bought herself a SLR camera when she enrolled at Sheridan College in the 80s, graduating with a diploma in Media Arts. Rachelle spent the first 14 years of her working life as a Media Specialist for the Scarborough Board of Education. She found herself doing more and more photography as part of her job like team and sports photos, special event coverage and school trips.
In 2000, an opportunity to change careers happened and she took a chance and became a Communication Technology teacher at Courtice Secondary School. After a few years she eventually changed schools and became the Department lead of Technology at the new Clarington Central Secondary School. Teaching gave Rachelle a chance to get back into photography and develop a course for her students that let them explore their creativity. This was the spark that she needed to spend more time in nature and to capture images that made her happy. Upgrading to digital photography and new gear changed everything. Eventually she started sharing her work online and started to get a following of people who had similar interests or just wanted to and appreciate the photos that she had taken.
Now retired from teaching, Rachelle makes it her mission to try and photograph something each and every day. The camera is a part of her, and she never leaves home without it. She considers herself a life- long learner. There is always something new to try, techniques to explore and challenges to be had.
Nothing makes Rachelle happier than getting outside and capturing the beauty around us each and every day. From plants and flowers to gorgeous scenery and even the wildlife she meets along the way, every moment to her is special.
Living in the Kawartha Lakes on Lake Scugog for the past 25 years has given Rachelle ample subjects, both on and off the water and while driving around the countryside of the Lindsay area. Who knows, you may just drive past her one day as she has pulled off the road to photograph something that has caught her eye.
