Kawartha Art Gallery is seeking Docent Volunteers!

A Docent is a trained volunteer guide who helps visitors engage with exhibits to enhance their Gallery experience. Docents are individuals who lead guided tours through art galleries, catering to visitors of various ages and interests. They engage with visitors, listen to their thoughts, and foster meaningful conversations, enhancing both their experience and appreciation of the artwork.

  • As a docent, you will lead tours, engage with visitors, and provide insights into the exhibits, helping them understand the content and enhancing their learning experience. This position is ideal for individuals who enjoy public speaking, are eager to learn, and want to contribute to a growing cultural community. No experience is required—training is provided.

  • Planning and conducting tours alone and in collaboration with others.

    • Individuals who are comfortable with public speaking

    • Have a willingness to learn and get involved

    • Are available for a minimum of 1-2 tours per month, given the demand. Tours last between 15 minutes and 1 hour and may occur on weekdays, weekends, and evenings

    • Attend orientation and complete ongoing training, including safety procedures and engagement strategies, while ensuring proper emergency protocol implementation.

    • Adhere to the policies and procedures outlined in the KAG Manual.

    • Commit to a minimum of 1 year, with 1-3 shifts per month.

    • Complete Vulnerable Sector and other screening procedures.

    • Maintain a friendly and approachable demeanor to provide a positive impression of the Gallery when interacting with guests, staff, and volunteers.

    • A Volunteer Coordinator will be available to address questions or concerns during placement.

    • Each person will have a monthly check-in to review progress, address challenges, and receive support. This ensures ongoing communication and allows for adjustments to projects as needed.

    • Minimum age: 18 years

    • Proficient in spoken English

    • Willingness to participate in training, including shadowing current docents and completing required evaluations

    • Working in a supportive environment, you will meet passionate and like-minded individuals

    • Behind the scenes view of Kawartha Art Gallery and its operations

    • Priority invitations to Gallery exhibitions and events.
