Stan Wojtaszek: A Retrospective

  • Kawartha Art Gallery 190 Kent Street West Kawartha Lakes, ON, K9V 2Y6 Canada (map)

A special one day exhibit of Stan Wojtaszek’s photography

“Photography has been my journey! When I first picked up a camera, my goal was to document the things that were important to me. As I developed my eye and technical skill levels, I became more challenged. As a response, my photography has become much more interpretive. I now have a tendency to explore an image, massaging it from a simple representational rendition into a more transformative, or artistic, reflection of the subject. The change comes gradually, almost unnoticeably. I find myself living with an image for a much longer period of time before calling it complete. It doesn’t mean I’ve abandoned my past; I’ve just found another path to explore.

Diversity is what makes photography such a compelling medium. The vocabulary I’ve learned allows me to express myself in a different way. I’ve become a forever student, looking forward to the next bend in the road.”

– Stan Wojtaszek • 1952 – 2023

ABOUT STAN WOJTASZEK

Born in 1952 in Balmertown, Ontario, a small Northwestern Ontario mining community, Stan was interested in photography from a very early age. He bought is first serious camera after finding full time employment. It was with this camera that Stan’s passion for the medium took root and continued to grow.

Initially, Stan’s photographic style was of a documentary nature. As Stan’s skill increased his style evolved, with his work becoming more representational, selective, and personal. Ever evolving as an artist, Stan’s works in his latter years became exploratory, trending toward the abstract.

Following a two-step process, similar to film days, Stan concentrated on exposure and composition, in camera, followed by development of the image in post-processing, previously the darkroom stage.

Active in the arts community in Ontario, Stan was an award-winning artist in juried exhibitions across Ontario and held association memberships with Kawartha Art Gallery, Kawartha Lakes Arts Council, Blue Mountain Foundation for the Arts and Spirit of the Hills Arts Association.

Stan’s work is in collections in Canada and the US.
