MAURICE ROBERTS (1888-1966)

One of ten children born to English parents, Canon the Reverend William Roberts and Sarah Elliott Roberts, Maurice Roberts was born on June 23, 1888 in Amherst Island, Ontario. During Maurice’s school years the family lived in the Adolphstown, Ontario where his father was the Rector at St. Alban’s Church and where Roberts family descendants still worship today. Reverend Roberts was also a musician and wrote hymns that are still used by the Anglican Church, today. Maurice went on to a career in banking which he pursued all his working life. It is known that Maurice loved to drive around Southern Ontario to paint on weekends and holidays and that he never had any formal art training. Maurice married Zeta Hill Roberts and they had one child, a daughter named Barbara who predeceased both her parents. Maurice passed away January 14, 1966 in Toronto, Ontario and when his wife Zeta later passed away she left her collection of Maurice’s paintings to relatives of her family that lived in the Lindsay area. Hudson Leavens, a nephew of Maurice’s from the Kingston area, assisted with delivering the paintings to the family of Zeta’s in Lindsay but he cannot remember the name of the family. The collection of artwork was then put up for auction at MacLean’s Auction barn in the spring of 1985 where Fenelon resident Wayne Robinson purchased a large quantity of the artwork. Wayne later donated over 70 pieces of the collection to the Gallery’s Permanent Collection. Maurice’s work in the Permanent Collection are all watercolours and were painted between 1945 and 1965 and give a view into the past as to what rural and urban areas looked like at that time. We are hoping that someone in the City of Kawartha Lakes may have some information regarding Maurice Roberts and his family so that the Gallery maybe able to establish a Kawartha connection to this Permanent Collection artist.
